The Florida State University Humanities Center is grounded in the broad commitment to the humanities that informed the institution's genesis and defined its 175-year history. The rich tradition of humanities and the broader liberal arts at FSU began more than a century ago, preceding the incorporation of the contemporary university itself. Since 1905, FSU has been at the nation’s forefront in developing modern liberal arts curricula and offering a robust selection of courses and area concentrations from an acclaimed faculty of humanities scholars and teachers. That commitment to the liberal arts and especially to the humanities has resulted, in the 21st century, in FSU ranking as one of the top universities in the U.S. in awarding Ph.D.s in the humanities and fine arts.

The FSU Humanities Center annually brings together scholars from diverse disciplines to engage and inspire each other’s research, collectively explore a common topic, and promote and advance the humanities through their participation in center events.

Welcome to the newest academic center at Florida State University! The FSU Humanities Center, founded in 2026, is a hub for research, teaching, learning and outreach. Over the next two years, the center’s activities will be structured around the topic, The Human in the Humanities. The topic will focus an intellectual agenda that will include a robust lecture series during 2026-2027 and a conference, Feb. 25-26, 2027, that will feature panels on four themes: understanding the human, expressing the human, beyond the human, and valuing the humanities.
